Garden “pests.”
We are looking for ways to deter pests in the garden in herbicide free and pesticide free ways. A couple problems in the garden this year are Entomosporium leaf spots and Tent Caterpillars (photo) that drop small green larvae down threads and these worms get on everything, including our bodies and hair as we move about the foliage, not to mention these caterpillars destroy the leaves on the trees. We have been attempting physical removal of the caterpillars; I felt bad at first about gathering the wigglies or pruning the nests out of the branches and throwing them in the river, but now I don’t!
As for the Entomosporium, research reports that a potassium bicarbonate based, broad-spectrum foliar fungicide in the form of a powder mildew is a preventative control and it may stop the fungus from getting worse, especially on our precious Saskatoon berry bushes. The spots are yellow and are taking over the leaf, no doubt being cheered on by the wet weather we’ve been having. Sigh. Summer? When?
Your comments and tips are more than welcome to help the garden out with these “pests.”
